Our Master's program teaches you about the methods and concepts involved in innovative plant research, sustainable plant cultivation and farm management, taking into account our constantly changing environment: climate change, scarce resources, structural transformation, societal developments...
You will learn how to work independently in an academic environment and make well-founded decisions based on social and ethical considerations.
Course Contents
The aim of the Master's program in Sustainable Plant Production in Research and Practice is to provide Bachelor's graduates with further qualifications to enable them to meet the diverse and complex professional demands in this field.
Our graduates are able to use their competence (knowledge, skills and mindset) and methodological tools to develop solutions and concepts for use in sustainable plant production.
Furthermore, they are able to incorporate their acquired knowledge in a goal-orientated manner to make independent, well-founded decisions that take social, academic and ethical considerations into account.
This 4-semester degree program consists of
- 10 compulsory modules
- 3 compulsory electives (selected from a catalogue of 8 modules)
- an elective module which can be chosen from those offered by the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt or any another university in Germany or abroad
- and the Master's thesis.

After 4 semesters, our Master's program "Sustainable Plant Production in Research and Practice" leads to a second professional qualification: the Master of Science (M. Sc.).
Our students enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, working in small groups with excellent supervision, making it easier for them to settle in and succeed in their studies
You can use the spacious areas in the greenhouse and outdoors to carry out your own student projects.
Our modern greenhouse facilities with an area of 2,400 m², divided into 19 cabins that can be individually climate-controlled, as well as a 3.5-hectare outdoor trial area for practical demonstrations and experiments, provide our students with the ideal conditions for a practice-oriented degree program and applied research.
In the first two semesters, you will acquire specialist knowledge in economics, climate protection and adaptation as well as sustainable plant research.
Based on your compulsory elective subjects, you can choose to acquire qualifications in two “specializations”:

The 3rd semester is devoted to research and practical experience and gives you the opportunity to put the knowledge you have acquired in your studies into practice.
The Master's thesis in your 4th semester is the final component of your degree program.
Applications
§ 3 Entry requirements
(1) In order to be admitted to the Master's in Sustainable Plant Production in Research and Practice, applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree with a minimum of 180 credits from a state university or state-recognized college of cooperative education in the fields of horticulture, agriculture, landscape architecture, forestry, biology, environmental science or a related subject, in line with the general admission requirements in § 3 (1) of the General Academic Regulations and Procedures.
(2) As an additional entry requirement in accordance with § 3 (2) General Academic Regulations and Procedures, applicants need an overall grade of at least 2.5 in the degree program mentioned in paragraph 1. If the overall grade is between 2.6 and 3.0, applicants can only be admitted to the Master's program in Sustainable Plant Production in Research and Practice if they provide evidence of at least 12 months of professional experience after their undergraduate degree in a plant production/horticultural business (including upstream and downstream operations), a related research institution, authority or institution directly related to agriculture.
(3) Admissions are handled by the Student Admissions Office of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.
Please note: This degree program is taught in German, meaning that applicants must be proficient in German (C1 level or higher) upon starting the course.
