Master’s in Urban and Spatial Planning_Positions
The four-semester Master's program Urban and Spatial Planning_Positions builds consecutively on the Bachelor's in Urban and Spatial Planning_Foundations and leads to a second professional qualification that also entitles the holder to membership in a chamber of architects (list of urban planners) and to use the professional title "urban planner". The degree program is designed to meet the current requirements of the job market and specializes in the various fields of Urban and Spatial Planning, with the focus at FH Erfurt primarily on sustainable planning and construction as well as land use and resource management.
The Master's program is fully accredited.
The Master's curriculum consists of project work, specialist studies and elective modules in the core areas:
- Urban Planning | Urban Development | Housing
- Society | Environment | Politics
- Infrastructure | Economics | Law
There are no restrictions on which courses you have to choose. However, in terms of developing your individual professional profile, you can also select a more specific area of specialization and have it indicated on your Master's degree certificate.
Project work
In the first two semesters, students carry out study projects on current planning issues. The study projects are conducted in groups so that students learn how to work in teams and communicate with each other towards a common goal. By collaborating with practitioners from the field and presenting the results at public events, the study projects form an important link to professional practice.

What criteria are assessed in the applications process?
The basic entry requirement is a Bachelor's degree with a minimum final grade of 2.0. During the applications process, the examination board checks whether the applicant can demonstrate that they have acquired the majority of the relevant competences included in the Bachelor's degree program. This applies to knowledge of the following specific subject areas and experience:
- Planning Law
- Urban Design and Open Space Planning
- Urban and Landscape Planning
- Regional Planning and Spatial Development
- Sociology of Cities and Spaces
- Planning Methods
- Communication in Planning
- Urban and Regional Economics
- Project Work
If not all but most (at least six of the nine topics listed) of the requirements are met, admission is possible subject to certain conditions.
This means that if you are already familiar with a large part of the above-mentioned topics through your degree program or work experience, you may be admitted to the program. However, if you have only covered some of the topics (less than six out of nine), you are unlikely to be admitted and it would not be in your best interests to do so.
Please note: This degree program is taught in German and therefore requires all students to have at least C1 level German skills. More information on applying to FH Erfurt as an international student can be found here.
Our graduates develop comprehensive competences and knowledge in the field of spatial planning in accordance with the requirements of the urban planners' lists issued by the chambers of architects.
Upon successful completion of their studies, students are awarded the academic title "Master of Science" (M. Sc.). This qualifies them to work in practical or academic fields of urban and spatial planning, including higher levels of public service, and entitles them to pursue doctoral studies.
